Connection Profile: Green Ribbon Campaign May 2015

Laura Louise Condell, Green Ribbon Campaign Officer explains what the Green Ribbon Campaign month is all about and how each of us can show our support for positive mental health conversations right throughout this month.

May 2015 marks the third year of the Green Ribbon Campaign, which takes place for the duration of May.

In   2014, over 1.6million conversations about mental health were sparked during Green Ribbon month. Created by See Change - the national partnership organisation which works towards reducing stigma around mental health difficulties - this year will be the biggest yet with over 500,000 ribbons being circulated around the country by our volunteers and ambassadors, partners, community organisations and supporters.

Mental health problems don’t discriminate; they can affect anyone at any stage of life. At least 1 in 4 of us in Ireland will experience a mental health problem in our lives. That’s enough people to fill Croke Park 14 times over!  We often hear that there’s a need to talk more about mental health and the free Green Ribbon provides a simple and practical way of turning that into action. The 500,000 people who will be wearing Green Ribbons this May will not only be showing their support for the campaign but also leaving the door open for conversation.

For someone who might be going through a tough time, just knowing that they don’t have to avoid the subject with you can make all the difference. Here’s our top tip for starting that conversation:

You don’t have to be an expert to start talking about mental health or have all the answers. Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do is to let someone know that you are there for them and simply listen.

Friday 15th May is National Time to Talk Day where people are encouraged to simply make the time and space for a conversation about mental health with family, friends and colleagues.

Check out
greenribbon.ie to find out more or secure your supply of green ribbons to distribute among your colleagues, networks and communities this May. There are also plenty of tips and resources for how to get the conversation started. Our Green Ribbon supporters pack is available to download at http://www.greenribbon.ie/supporters-pack, which includes many ways to show your support.

Here are 7 ways you can show your support and help get the message out to your contacts:

1) Add the Green Ribbon logo to your websites, pictures and correspondence (available from

2) Wear the Green Ribbon on your profile picture - Add a ribbon badge to your social media profiles in 3 clicks here

3) Book in advance to speak with one voice on National Time to Talk Day
Count yourself into this year's Thunderclap challenge to build our impact throughout the month. We have set ourselves the goal of having over 500 social media users simultaneously posting about the Green Ribbon campaign on May 15th National Time to Talk Day

4) Get a Green Ribbon banner for your own Facebook page (available from

What our Students Say

“I am really enjoying the Distance Learning Certificate. I can study at home, when it suits me and I am learning so much about counselling. It is a great way for me to start my studies in this area. The material is easy to access and the support from the lecturers is a great help. I’m looking forward to the weekend workshops too, to put all the theory into practice”
