Emotional Focused Therapy for Couples CPD Workshop

Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples

An integrative and deeply experiential approach where the therapist’s modelling of empathy and capacity for slowing down reactivity is central.

This One day Workshop is an Introduction to EFT and is open to Therapists and Trainees who work with individuals and groups as well as those who work with couples or who wish to explore developing their skills in working in these areas.

Course Details

In the two decades since Bowlby’s death, extensive research and numerous studies have been published confirming and extending his theories and assertions that at every age, “human beings habitually seek and maintain physical and emotional closeness with at least one particular irreplaceable other. We especially seek out this person when we feel stressed, unsure or anxious. We are just hardwired this way”. (p 41 Johnson, 2014)

This concept forms the core of Emotionally Focussed Therapy (EFT) for couples and families as developed by Sue Johnson. Since its beginning and earliest studies (1984), EFT holds an astounding 70 -75 per cent success rate.

It is an integrative and deeply experiential approach where the therapist’s modelling of empathy and capacity for slowing down reactivity is central. It has been described as a mixture of Bowlby, Perls and Rogers and is routinely taught to counsellors in training in at least twenty five countries around the globe.

  • EFT is essentially based on Attachment theory, taking the view that romantic love is essentially concerned with our needs to form secure bonds with a significant other. Our brains and nervous systems are wired for connection, contrary to the contemporary tendency in social trends and attitudes to exalt independence and individuality.
  • EFT also integrates contributions from biology, philosophy, neuroscience, ethology and social science.

What our Students Say

"This course highlighted and revisited some of the areas I have covered before - it has given me the confidence to start actively looking at creative play again...a real breath of fresh air for practical, back to basics ways of working with children & after-all play is child's work."
Sarah-Jane Conneff - Child & Adolescent Counselling Taster Day

What our Students Say

“My experience with PCI was the best decision in my life, I would rate PCI 10. I'm not saying it was easy, especially starting a new career at the age of 50, but I got through with a lot of hard work and dedication. Liam McCarthy and Josephine Murphy were an inspiration and all the other Tutors I had during the four years. Since I got my Degree I have been so busy counselling, only last week I was offered another new job, its amazing. Next year I will be 70 and hopefully the work will continue.”
