Approaching Autism through Psychoanalysis

The workshop is grounded in a modern Lacanian reading of Freud’s work and will draw on recent work on autism by practitioners working in clinical settings with a psychoanalytic approach

Course Details

The diagnosis of autism has increased hugely in recent years. In spite of the shortcomings, improved children’s’ services are enabling more people with autism to enter college and the workplace. The dearth of adult services means that more autistic adults are coming to counselling for support in leading fulfilling lives within various networks and communities. Many counsellors do not feel equipped to respond to the specific challenges that autism presents to ‘the talking cure’. This workshop will present a psychoanalytic framework drawing on Freud, Lacan and first-hand accounts of autism. The aim is to move from theory to practice over the course of the day.

What our Students Say

“My experience with PCI was the best decision in my life, I would rate PCI 10. I'm not saying it was easy, especially starting a new career at the age of 50, but I got through with a lot of hard work and dedication. Liam McCarthy and Josephine Murphy were an inspiration and all the other Tutors I had during the four years. Since I got my Degree I have been so busy counselling, only last week I was offered another new job, its amazing. Next year I will be 70 and hopefully the work will continue.”
