Insight into the Hidden Forces that Shape our Decisions

Brian Ó Murchu got more than he expected when he enrolled for the Postgraduate Certificate in Psychology; after being bitten by the psychology bug he has continued on to further study.

Brian Ó Murchu got more than he expected when he enrolled for the Postgraduate Certificate in Psychology; after being bitten by the psychology bug he has continued on to further study.  Brian, who is from Dublin first studied Anthropology in Scotland and did a Postgrad in Counselling Psychology in South Africa.  “After I completed my Counselling Psychology course, I was interested in doing ‘pure’ psychology for a more general overview of the subject, particularly as there are so many different branches of psychology.  I looked at the range of part-time psychology options available in Dublin (research is a lot easier and quicker now with the Internet!).  Choosing the PCI College course was a decision based on my own interests, affordability and location; the course included a Sports Psychology module which really interested me, as I am a keen athlete”.

Asked about whether the course impacted on his day to day life during study, Brian says “Absolutely! The programme was like an education of attention to how people react to various situations and phenomena, and the hidden forces that shape our decisions.  I have learned how expectations shape perception and how emotion rather than cognition can have a large impact on decision making”

Coming from a social science background, Brian said he found the biological psychology components to be the most challenging “But they were also the most rewarding when I persevered with them.  The course has sparked my interest to pursue further study in psychology as it is such a richly developing area.  At the time I started the course, I wasn’t sure if I would go further but the course has generated a new enthusiasm for psychology and psychology experiments”.

He continues “The course was mainly taught by the Programme Leader Dr. Derek Dorris who developed the course and had an infectious enthusiasm and knowledge of the subject.  There were a number of guest lecturers specialising in different areas which added to the diversity and value of the course.  It gives a great overview of five different areas of psychology and as a Level 8 award is a great stepping-stone to a Higher Diploma or Masters”

His parting advice to fellow students is “Beware! Once you have an interest in Psychology, it may not abate – requiring even further study!”
