Two Paths, Same Destination - Your Counselling Career

PCI College President Eoin Stephens outlines the HETAC BA honours in Counselling & Psychotherapy (full-time) and the two paths to professional qualification, ahead of this weekend’s experiential Taster Day.

Since the 1990’s PCI College has offered a part-time BSc honours in Counselling & Psychotherapy.  Lead by the vision of founders Liam McCarthy and Josephine Murphy, the BSc was one of the first degree programmes for counselling education in Ireland.  Validated by Middlesex University, the course has allowed hundreds of students to achieve qualification and meet accreditation criteria to practice as professional therapists, while continuing with other commitments in terms of work and family.

We are very excited now to provide a full-time option for students who can dedicate more time to class work and study, with the commencement in September of our BA (Hons) in Counselling & Psychotherapy. This is our first full-time programme towards a qualification in counselling and will be delivered over three years full-time, at our Dublin City Centre Campus, Burgh Quay. The BA degree is validated by HETAC and like the BSc, is designed to meet professional accreditation criteria for qualified counsellors.

The availability of this course means that students now have two distinct paths to choose from in perusing their counselling & psychotherapy career;  the BA, delivered full-time over three years in Dublin or the BSc, delivered part-time over four years and taught at six different locations nationwide with various timetable options available.  Entry to both courses is by application form and interview and students entering the BSc programme must also complete a Certificate in Counselling & Psychotherapy of 100 hours or equivalent. The Certificate is included in the 3 Year BA programme so is not a prerequisite for the course.

Both courses offer validated standards of academic excellence, with a unique blend of experiential and theoretical learning in a classroom setting.  All members of the PCI College lecturing faculty are themselves qualified, practicing counsellors and therapists, bringing current, real-world experience of client work and the issues facing counsellors in practice today.  With small classes and comprehensive support for class and clinical work, students on both programmes reap the benefits of individual attention and join a college that has educated hundreds of qualified counsellors over more than 20 years.
As the counselling & psychotherapy profession moves closer to statutory regulation, we are very pleased to offer the BA programme to those students who are available for full-time study and want to complete their training in 3 years.   It continues the humanistic and integrative approach of our BSc in Counselling & Psychotherapy, and provides a broad education in counselling, with the experiential learning environment that characterises PCI College’s ethos and approach.

We have developed a simple graphic which shows these two distinct routes to professional qualification, both validated by recognised academic bodies and both designed to meet accreditation criteria to practice as an accredited therapist.

This weekend’s Taster Day (Saturday 7th June 2014, Dublin City Centre) will provide a unique opportunity for people interested in counselling to take part in an informative and fun day of experiential learning, getting an introductory taste of counselling skills, theories and personal development.  If you have always wondered if counselling is the career for you, join us on Saturday to learn more.
