How CBT can help clients with addictions to drug use, gambling, gaming, sex, porn, social media and the internet.

Addiction is prevalent in all societies and requires a specialised approach to therapeutic treatment. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is proven to be effective when applied to the addition population, including those struggling with behavioural addictions, such as gambling, sex and online addictions. Participants of this one-day workshop will gain familiarity with the CBT model of Addiction and its application to the understanding and treatment of the most common addiction problems.

What are the benefits of doing this course?

A deeper understanding of addictions in general will be garnered in addition to the practical application of CBT tools that work effectively in a therapeutic setting with those experiencing addiction. Participants will gain transferrable skills, such as case formulation and become familiar with suitable CBT techniques which can be used in practice.

What will you learn?

Participants will learn to apply a Cognitive Behavioural framework & client-friendly Cognitive Behavioural interventions to common addictions such as: – Alcohol/drug addiction – Compulsive Gambling – Sexual Addiction/Compulsivity The relevance of the Internet will also be discussed, in relation to fuelling the addictions above, but more especially in relation to specifically online addictive behaviours such as Gaming and Social Media.

  • The Nature of Addiction
  • The Cognitive Model of Addiction.
  • CBT and Addiction – Case Formulation.
  • CBT techniques: Psychoeducation; Challenging Cognitive Distortions and Negative Automatic Thoughts; Behavioural Experiments; Socratic Questioning.

Eligibility

This is a CPD workshop specifically designed for Counsellors & Psychotherapist or other helping professionals with therapeutic experience and students currently in professional training. BSc Counselling & Psychotherapy students in Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 of their studies are all invited to apply for this CPD workshop.

Language Requirements

All candidates are required to satisfy the English language requirement. Candidates whose first language is not English and who are presenting qualifications other than the Leaving Certificate may satisfy the requirement through the completion of the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), or equivalent, on the basis that they obtain a minimum band score of 6, which denotes a very good skill level of English. It should be noted that these are the minimum requirements in English and PCI College may set higher requirements in each case.

Students can expect to be provided with advice and support concerning any learning difficulties that they may encounter. Any diagnosed learning difficulty, e.g. dyslexia, must be noted on the application.
